The NUCKLE Phase 1 project saw LTP Integration collaborate once again with Briton Fabricators Ltd to devise a task lighting scheme for two railway stations in Coventry and Nuneaton.

NUCKLE Phase 1 - Task Lighting - LTP Integration

Client Overview

The Coventry to Nuneaton rail upgrade, known locally as NUCKLE Phase 1, has improved the existing rail line between Coventry and Nuneaton, which is managed by London Midland.

The project has delivered two new stations – one at Coventry (Ricoh) Arena and one at Bermuda Park in Warwickshire.

NUCKLE Phase 1 has also seen the extensions of the existing platforms at Bedworth station and a new bay platform at Coventry station.

The scheme was delivered by Coventry City Council, Centro and Warwickshire County Council – with Coventry City Council acting as the lead authority on behalf of the three partners.

It was funded by the three partners, as well as the Department for Transport (DfT) and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Project Brief

Further to previous successful collaborations on architectural lighting projects across the UK, LTP Integration was commissioned by Briton Fabricators Ltd to design a task lighting scheme for two sites as part of this wider regeneration scheme.

LTP Integration was required to illuminate the steps and ramps of platforms 1 and 2 at Bermuda Park in Nuneaton, as well as the steps at Coventry (Ricoh) Arena, to satisfy lighting levels as per BS EN 13201-2 2003 to a luminance of 150lux.

The installations also needed to provide the required robust integrity that is necessary in the heavy footfall environments of such railway stations.

Technical Solutions

To meet the brief and the required lighting effects and levels, LTP Integration used its extensive experience in structure lighting design and installation to select the most appropriate luminaires for this application.

Each of the lighting elements specified used a low voltage LED based solution, ensuring energy efficiency and environmentally friendly results, with due consideration with regards to light pollution.

LTP Integration turned to South Wales based specialist lighting manufacturers i-Vision (UK) to design and produce a handrail light solution that would satisfy the required lighting levels and offer a pleasant aesthetic. This product projects the illumination exactly where required, thus minimising light pollution.

PictorRAIL is a crafted handrail lighting system made using 316 marine grade stainless steel for the modern urban environment.

With a wide variety of fixing solutions and fully bespoke options available, the product offers great flexibility and modular, simple installation.

Outcome

Lighting levels were achieved by deploying over 450 individual handrail lights arranged in an opposing pattern and set at a 30-degree angle from the vertical, creating spectacular results.
