LTP Integration’s project management and installation expertise came to the fore to illuminate the exterior of ‘The Tower’ at Great West Quarter – a 27-storey residential building.

Kew Eye Tower, Brentford - LTP Integration

Client Overview

Barratt London is a leading residential developer based in the capital.

The brand boasts a portfolio ranging from state-of-the-art apartments to mixed-use regeneration schemes, such as this transformation of a five-hectare agglomeration of disused industrial and office buildings into a vibrant new development of 900 homes.

Designed by Assael Architecture, The Tower – a striking 27-storey double skinned structure incorporating a 100-room apart-hotel on the lower floors – stands to the west of the site to ensure minimal disturbance from wind.

Project Brief

LTP Integration was appointed by Barratt London to deliver an energy-efficient LED spine lighting feature for The Tower.

It is the prominent centrepiece of the flagship regeneration project, Great West Quarter (GWQ) in Brentford, Middlesex.

Located along West London’s ‘Golden Mile’, the structure offers views across the capital and nearby Kew Gardens from the publicly accessible viewing gallery.

Technical Solutions

LTP Integration was tasked with taking the principle of the design proposal, penned by Hoare Lea Lighting, and translating it into a stunning exterior architectural lighting solution.

The lighting arrangement consists of 396 RGB IP67 rated, individually addressable LED nodes (Traxon Technologies’ LED Dot XL-6 String) powered by 13 LED drivers.

The point sources of light are set within stainless steel ‘candles’ that feature extruded UV stable acrylic cores to carry the lighting forward of the building to create a floating light effect.

These ‘candles’ are horizontally arranged in rows of six and are set onto a two metre bespoke transom, formed from 3mm aluminium and powder coated to match the RAL colour of the façade panels.

The installation comprises of 53 units that are set at 1000mm intervals up the north facing aspect of the building.

For control, LTP Integration chose the Traxon Butler XT2 – a compact and versatile DIN rail mountable control engine with built in e:cue software.

This was paired with three Butler S2 micro servers, each offering powerful RDM-capable DMX512 output and the storage of up to 99 pre-programmed cuelists.

The system is capable of creating intricate cascading lighting effects as well as a vast array of colour scenes, and runs in standalone mode 365 days of the year.

Outcome

The integration of lighting to the spine of The Tower has delivered one of the tallest interactive light sculptures in Europe, whilst providing the whole development with an impressive focal feature, which can be seen up to several miles away on a clear night.

Our engineers, who utilised a window cleaner’s basket that was suspended from above and lowered down the face of The Tower, successfully overcame the challenges faced by strong winds, inclement weather and working at such height.

Comment

“This was one of LTP Integration’s most rewarding installations to date. Our engineers thoroughly enjoyed enduring a series of tough challenges to produce a truly striking feature that will now be part of West London’s famous skyline.” – Keith Elms, Business Manager (LTP Integration)
