The popular North Wales seaside resort town of Rhyl this week saw its skyline lit up in white, green and purple to mark a key milestone.

Tuesday 6th February was the 100th anniversary of the introduction of The Representation of People Act, a significant date for women in the UK who campaigned for the right to vote.

Pont y Ddraig – the new bridge over the harbour – along with the Sky Tower and promenade shelters, were all set to display the suffragette colours in remembrance of the sacrifices made a century ago.

The event was arranged by Rhyl Town Council in collaboration with Denbighshire County Council and the Pavilion Theatre.

Rhyl mayor, Cllr Alan James stated: “It is understood that we’re the only town in North Wales to mark the event in this way but we felt it was important.

“The centenary should not go unnoticed. Hopefully, the lights will serve as a reminder to people fighting their own battles that anything can be achieved.”
