Due to the energy conscious world we live in, many areas are seeing traditional incandescent bulbs and fluorescent fittings being replaced by LED lighting. Here are just some of the advantages of LED:

  1. LED bulbs use less energy (watts) to produce the same of light (lumens) as fluorescent or incandescent bulbs.
  2. The average LED bulb has a life expectancy of 50,000+ hours, compared to 10,000-15,000 hours for a fluorescent bulb and a measly 1,000 hours for an incandescent bulb.
  3. LED lights that are on permanently for 24 hours each day will only need to be replaced once every five years on average.
  4. LED lighting offers lower maintenance costs and less hassle than fluorescent and incandescent alternatives.
  5. LED bulbs therefore also reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
  6. LEDs will not blow or burn out like fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, significantly reducing the risk of damage to neighbouring components as well as building occupants – they will eventually reach a stage called L70, when they only produce 70% of their original light output as they come to the end of their rated lifespan.
  7. LEDs emit light in a specific direction, whereas fluorescent and incandescent bulbs emit light and heat in all directions.

In recent years, innovative new buildings have incorporated LED lighting directly into their designs, with interior and exterior lighting for buildings becoming a critical feature in the planning and sustainability assessments of these projects (BREEAM, WELL Building Standard etc.).
